Born in Tuscany and raised in the Bronx, Sanford married at age 19. She divorced her husband 14 years later and rose to the top of the magazine publishing field while raising two sons, remarrying, divorcing and finally retiring to the Bay Area of California. She currently lives in Sausalito, California.

Sanford's book Look for the Moon in the Morning, published in 2006 by Elders Academy Press, is a collection of her inspirational columns.
